The only thing more difficult than going to a Mexican restaurant is the trip back home. I can’t begin to describe how I feel when I leave the restaurant feeling like I have just escaped from a war zone. That’s because the restaurant is a war zone. You are not sure if you’re going to get a decent seat, or if you’ll even get a seat at all.
La paz, Mexico is the last city on earth you would expect to see on the map. It sits in the middle of the most remote desert on earth. To get there you have to drive the length of the desert, then trek over the mountains in a long, hard slog just so you can find a place to stay. The most scenic spots are the two that are located closest to the border, and both of these are located in the town of Los Mochis.
The first thing you notice when you drive into La paz is the vast desert landscape. The air is thick and dry, almost like a desert in the middle of the desert. The landscape is so barren that the only indication that the region is even remotely habitable is a dirt road. The road is lined with hundreds of large dunes and one that is literally a mile long. The road is almost like a road map and its path across the desert is like a map itself.
The road is so smooth that I thought I was getting lost. It’s so wide that the desert is actually barely big enough to contain the town, which is located in the center of the desert. The town is made up of a few small villages and one large town. The main attraction is the many natural springs and waterfalls running throughout the town. There are dozens of buildings and dozens of people living in the town.
I’m glad to report that the road is not only smooth and wide, but it’s really easy to navigate. I don’t think I’ve been lost once on this road.
